Our Microbiology Department offers a comprehensive range of diagnostic services, including bacteriological, fungal, mycobacterial culture, and serological analyses. These vital assessments aid in the effective treatment of patients grappling with infections.

Introduction:

The microbiology division offers extensive diagnostic services encompassing bacteriological, fungal, mycobacterial culture, and serological assessments, pivotal in treating patients with infections. A diverse array of specimens including blood, body fluids, urine, pus, respiratory secretions, preoperative swabs, catheter tips, tissues, and stool are analyzed, comprising approximately 40,000 clinical samples and around 12,000 surveillance samples annually.

Diagnostic Procedures:

The department features BacT alert automated systems with 120 cells for blood culture, catering to both adult and pediatric patients, expediting results with a reduced incubation period of four hours instead of the conventional 24 hours. Mycobacterial cultures utilize BacT alert automated systems with 60 cells. The Automated Vitek 2 Compact system is utilized for identifying and testing the susceptibility of bacteria and fungi. Routine analyses encompass anaerobic, fungal, and mycobacterial cultures of various clinical samples. The introduction of MALDI TOF aids in the early identification of bacteria in various samples.

Quality Objectives:

The department aims to

  • Enhance the turnaround time for Gram stain smears during night duty hours
  • Minimize deviations in blood culture turnaround from ICU/BMT
  • Achieve nil variance in EQAS reports.

Surveillance:

The department actively engages in monitoring antibiotic resistance, infection spread prevention, and conducts continued education for healthcare personnel. It undertakes surveillance in key areas like theatres, ICUs, BMT units, and more.

Infection Control:

The department diligently reviews infection and antibiotic policies, adheres to strict infection control practices, and participates in quality control activities aligned with NABH standards.

Infrastructure:

The facility boasts a pneumatic chute system, laminar airflow workstations, fungal culture capabilities, dedicated areas for infection control activities, decontamination and sterilization zones, media and reagent preparation spaces, serology laboratory, and a hospital information system for seamless reporting.
